‘Beautiful’ woman, 22, ‘who lit up the room’ stabbed to death inside tower block

A young woman found stabbed to death at a tower block could ‘light up a room with her infectious smile and laughter’, a heartbroken friend has said.

Elinor O’Brien, 22, died after being found by police at the property Manchester city centre on August 16 and Kevin Mannion, 44, has been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Mannion appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court on Friday and was remanded into police custody, the force confirmed.

Tributes have poured in for the woman, who was due to celebrate her 23rd birthday in the coming days.

One friend told the Manchester Evening News: “Elinor was a beautiful young girl with the rest of her life ahead of her. She would have been 23 next week on August 28.

“She was loved by anyone who had the pleasure of meeting her, she lit up the room with her infectious smile and laughter. Many hearts have been shattered and will never be the same. RIP our angel.”

Police were called by the North West Ambulance Service to reports of an injured woman found unresponsive at Great Northern Tower at 12.30pm.

Officers rushed to the scene and found her with stab wound injuries, Greater Manchester Police confirmed.

In a statement, the force said the woman’s family are currently by being supported by trained specialists.

They said: “At around 12.30pm on Tuesday 16 August 2022, Greater Manchester Police received a request for assistance from Northwest Ambulance Service following reports of an injured 22-year-old female reported to be unresponsive at a property on Watson Street in the Manchester city centre.

“Officers attended the scene, and it was quickly established the woman had been stabbed.

“A 44-year-old male was arrested at the scene on suspicion of a section 18 assault and charged with wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

“Sadly, the 22-year-old woman since passed away and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.”

Police went on to confirm an arrest has been made.

They went on: “Kevin Mannion of Watson Street, Manchester has now been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm of the 22-year-old woman and appeared at Manchester Magistrates Court on Friday 19 August 2022 and was remanded into custody.”
